Christ of the Trenches (detail)
'Christ of the Trenches' consists of an assemblage of new and historic objects examining the role of religious faith in the Great War. Both sides firmly believed that their cause was just, and that god was on their side. The bomb-damaged calvary of the town of Neuve Chapelle was adopted and taken into the trenches by Allied troops. This sentiment is exemplified by a small group of ‘pocket shrines’, which soldiers carried with them into battle.
