Project 14
Unit X / COIL
With Level 4 Product Design students and MITID
Unit X / COIL 2022: L4 MMU Product Design students and L4 Product Design students from MIT, Pune, India worked together on a shared packaging brief.
Using the 2022 Mintel Trend report for direction, a brief was developed to design a food and retail experience for a brand of their choice.
(As revealed in the Mintel report) consumers have a “newfound appreciation for occasions when happiness, fun or playfulness can be found in everyday items and activities.” This report drove the focus for ‘treats’ packaging to be rethought and provided valuable insights about how treats are bought and eaten in India and Manchester.
Huhtamaki, global packaging manufacturer (Pret â Manger, McDonalds) joined our student reviews providing design feedback and answering packaging questions posed via Miro. MMU’s newly launched Circular Economy Network (CEN) have also supported and advised our students in making sustainable material choices.
The students from MMU and Pune worked together in mixed teams to share findings on packaging, trends and customer needs. Packaging research and design outputs were shared via Miro and MS Teams every other week during live review mornings.
The collaborative nature of UNIT X has provided valuable insights into design practice and process, giving our product design students the opportunity to engage with and learn from international peers.
