An essay published in a catalogue accompanying the survey exhibition of Ryudai Takano at the National Museum of Art, Osaka.
This essay explores the specific methods and gestures of Takano's rapidly changing photographic practice. Across his career to date, Takano has displayed a distinctive sensitivity towards the gestures and propositions of photographic images as they are made, thinking less about the depiction or representation of content, and more about the assemblage, overloading, mapping, meeting and marking that constitutes the photographic act as it is considered in the expanded field of contemporary photography. This text asserts a distinctive place for Takano in contemporary Japanese photography in recognising the generative capacities for the photograph, leading towards his most recent installation works.
