Rimmer-Piekarczyk, R., Kendall, L., 2023.

Agency and Awakening: Opportunities within a Score.

Output Type:Conference paper
Presented at:Performing Scores/Scoring Performance
Venue:Manchester Metropolitan University: Performance Research Group
Dates:11/7/2023 - 12/7/2023

In this presentation, Kendall and Rimmer-Piekarczyk will explore parallel lines of enquiry that have emerged from their practice-research as performers in the Reckless Sleepers' work A String Section (concept and direction Leen Dewilde): a tightly scored performative experiment, the original improvised work engages the performer in a playful yet destructive relationship with a wooden chair and handsaw.

Juxtaposing traditional academic presentation and scenic imagery inherent to Dewilde's work, the presenters will utilise the frame of the performance-presentation to disseminate new insights into this practice. Specifically, Kendall will aim to reawaken and reveal knowledge embedded within the score and herself as an act of transmission, whilst Rimmer-Piekarczyk will view the score through the lens of 'doxa' (Bourdieu, 1977), exploring the performer's sense of agency and resulting actions.

Kendall and Rimmer-Piekarczyk have inhabited the score of A String Section since 2012: the identification and meeting of these particular strands of enquiry aims to facilitate, an as yet hidden conduit of communication for them.
This presentation addresses concepts as articulated in the conference call out, including: embodying scores / the scored body, archiving scores / performing the archive, scores, the performer, and patterns of authority and scores and transmission of scores.
