'Design for Resilience' is the first in-depth examination of this critically important area. The approach is grounded in real-world examples that have stood the test of time, from which conclusions are drawn. The book culminates in a new vision for design. Part I examines the roots of modern design and its inherently harmful environmental and social features. The features and characteristics of resilience are investigated and linked to sustainable living, with an emphasis on context-appropriate practices. The resulting design priorities reflect qualities that have demonstrated their enduring relevance in human culture. Part II examines a wide range of precedents that have shown themselves to be resilient over centuries, if not millennia. These are discussed in five chapters that look at: Home, Food, Culture, Play and Spirit. Collectively, they offer deeper insights into what design for resilience means in practice. Part III includes chapters on design for good, lessons from the pandemic, and establishing the qualities of resilient objects and activities. By delineating their multi-dimensional elements, a rich understanding of the field emerges, which culminates in Ten Principles of Design for Resilience
