An interrogation of the sometimes superficial nature of art in the public realm. With observations from the cannon of fine art and its influence on art deemed to have social value, this essay critiques the ongoing Cultural Olympiad expenditure, against the global financial downturn, reviewing public art in a time of austerity. Departing from the traditional self-congratulatory stance of the community artist, this essay offers the sector new insights into the potential reach of the arts as a vehicle for the generation of new ideas, and engaging with non-traditional, art-resistant public.
