Hannah takes home Fashion Innovation Award
FASHION student Hannah Sykes has scooped a prize at this year’s Graduate Fashion Week.
The 21-year old took the Manchester weather inside with fabrics that reacted to rain as part of the collection which won her the BooHoo Fashion Innovation Award at this week’s event.
The collection is inspired by Hannah’s travels in China, and by research that she conducted into women during the First World War.
She said: “My collection begun by a material I had sourced on my travels in China. The material was a bold geometric pattern, and through research this led me to the dazzle camouflage used in World War One. My design philosophy blended well with my military research relating to the World War One uniforms, and women at war.”
Fantastic achievement
Hannah was one of 21 Manchester School of Art students to show her collection at the University’s catwalk show on Monday.
Louise Adkins, Senior Lecturer for BA Fashion at Manchester School of Art said: “It is fantastic that Hannah has won this award. Graduate Fashion Week is a unique opportunity for our students to showcase their talent, make great contacts and really springboard their careers.”
In 2010, Manchester School of Art student Rebecca Thompson beat more than 1,000 graduates from 35 universities to win the top prize at Graduate Fashion Week, the £20,000 River Island Gold Award, judged by a team including fashion designer Alberta Ferretti.
Last year, Camilla Grimes scooped the £1,000 Creative Catwalk award, and in 2013 Jousianne Propp won the Stuart Peters Visionary Knitwear Award and the Karen Millen Portfolio Award.
