Award winning artist to showcase glass sculpture
AN MMU student has been chosen to exhibit at one of the country’s most prestigious art events.
Ana Rosa Hopkins, a PhD student in the Manchester School of Art, will be part of the British Glass Biennale, part of the International Festival of Glass.
Ana’s piece, When You Feel a Need to Look Closer, was selected from more than 200 applicants to be part of the festival, which takes place in Stourbridge at the end of May.
Now in its sixth edition, the Biennale is open to UK-based artists, designers and craftspeople working in all areas of contemporary glass practice or using glass as a key design element. This year’s exhibitors include artists originally from Costa Rica, South Korea, Israel, Sweden, Germany and Japan, and there are also 13 students included in the selection.
Remarkable quality
Speaking about the selection process, Elisabeth Johnson, International Festival of Glass project director, said: “The quality of submissions was remarkable and the jury had a really tough time creating the shortlist.
“We were impressed with the variety of styles and range of techniques on offer and were particularly pleased to see so many student submissions, showing that the appetite for studio glass continues to grow.
“I can’t wait to see the final exhibition and am on tenterhooks for the awards evening on 27 May.”
Ana has previously won a national prize for her bowls made from glass collected during the riots of Summer 2012 and was also invited to take part in two international art residencies last year.
Opportunities
Ana is studying at the Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design (MIRIAD) at the Manchester School of Art.
MIRIAD offers opportunities for postgraduate research degrees in art and design and the history and theory of art and design.
