Beautiful installation at London Design Festival
INSPIRING graduate designers Ian McIntyre and Felix de Pass are turning heads again – this time at the London Design Festival at the V&A.
The Manchester School of Art graduates are receiving rave reviews for a ‘mesmerising experiment with light’ – called Candela - on show at the museum until Sunday, September 28.
Writing in Creative Review, Rachael Steven calls Candela her “favourite piece” at the LDF despite the draw of headline works Zaha Hadid’s Crest and Barber Osgerby’s Double Space.
Placed in a darkened room among medieval tapestries, Candela is made up of a large rotary machine which sits just above the gallery floor. As the face of the machine rotates, it passes hundreds of LED lights housed in a ceramic casing, emitting an eerie green glow.
‘Beautifully constructed’
Inspired by the concept of time, it was made using superluminova, a phosphorescent material which is charged by LEDs as the machine spins, producing a series of luminous patterns which fade and brighten.
Writes Rachael: “It’s beautifully constructed and the changing patterns are hypnotic.”
The work is a collaboration between graphic artist Michael Montgomery and de Pass and McIntyre, who both graduated from Manchester School of Art in 2006 in Three Dimensional Design.
With a background in product design and applied art, Ian employs a mix of design and craft skills to his work – producing studio editions and developing shapes, materials and techniques for industry.
Elle Decoration
In 2013 he was shortlisted for the British Ceramics Biennial Award 2013 and his series One Pottery for Another Country was shortlisted for the Elle Decoration British Design Awards 2012.
Felix de Pass is known for a number of projects including Established and Sons and the Wishlist.
