Students display their work created from Mercedes car parts

“Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz?”

2 April 2014

Charity auction features art created from car parts

“Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz?”

These lyrics hang in the air, when viewing the seductive and practical sculptures and images produced by nine young sculptors of the Fine Art Course at Manchester School of Art.

From tomorrow (April 3) everybody could become the owner of a transformed Mercedes Benz.

Following a visit to the Mercedes plant at Dronsfield, young artists Alex Baker, Jodie Cheung, Alison Olson, Joe Brotherton, Kieran March, Abigail Harris, Chloe Herbert, Amy Field and Sue Rowlands came back with bags full of Mercedes components.

Creative upcycling

In the spirit of creative up-cycling, they have transformed these abandoned pieces of scrap into seductive and desirable artworks for in and outdoor use and will now be auctioning then off to raise money for local charities.

MA student and project co-ordinator Alison Olsen said: “The ‘Dronsfield’ recycle project has been a great opportunity for me to get to know the students and work  professionally with a business outside the Art School.

“As an artist I enjoyed working with the objects, giving them a new lease of life.

I would like to thank the students for their input as many of them are in there final year and under a significant amount of pressure to finish their studio work for assessments.”

Great opportunity

Programme leader in Fine Art, Brigitte Jurack  said: “This has been a great opportunity for the students to access some wonderful material and to work for a charitable outcome.

“Students have in fact donated not only time, but their imaginative creativity to this exciting project. I would like to thank Richard Bannister from Tecmark.co.uk for initiating this project.”

The auction will take place in the Manchester School of Art Benzie Building tomorrow from 6pm to 8pm. For free tickets, go online to https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/scrapyard-sculpture-exhibition-tickets-11030684073
