Ceramicist Stephen Dixon exhibits at Contemporary Craft Fair
WORK by Manchester School of Art Professor Stephen Dixon is one of the highlights of the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair.
Professor Dixon has created ceramic busts of the three Nobel Peace Prize winners unable to collect their awards due to incarceration – Liu Xiaobo, Aung San Suu Kyi and Carl von Ossietzky.
He was invited to show his work as an invited guest exhibitor, and will also be giving a talk today about the social and political influences behind his style of work.
Fair organisers Angela Mann and Ann-Marie Franey told a-n.co.uk: “We are thrilled to be welcoming Stephen Dixon to our show this year. He has been a keen supporter of the GNCCF since its inception when he helped select exhibitors for the inaugural show, and we’re delighted he has chosen to launch his new collection of work at this year’s event.”
Great graduates
The depth of talent at MMU is also demonstrated by the graduates exhibiting at the show.
Jewellery designer Eleanor Simms has won the Godfrey Holland Award for Best New Designer/Maker at the show for her unusual fabric jewellery.
Joseph Hartley, who was a winner at last year’s New Designers, is showcasing his new collection of ceramics, Kira Meyer is showing her glassware.
Four 2013 graduates were also chosen for the “Great Northern Graduates” showcase – Hannah Quinn, Sarah Crosby, Emily Hughes and Jessica Swallow.
