University gears up for Manchester Weekender
3 October 2013
We’re taking in part in events across the city
MMU will be involved in a host of events as part of the forthcoming Manchester Weekender.
The Manchester School of Art, Special Collections and the North West Film Archives will all be taking part in the city-wide event which has returned for its fourth year.
At Manchester School of Art on Saturday 12 October, independent music industry experts at Un-Convention will lead the creation of a complete album, from scratch – in just one day in a one-off and interactive day that explores art, music and innovation.
Five bands will be recording live on the fourth floor, with the audience not only invited to see the production and manufacture of 200 CDs but to work with School of Art students to make their own album sleeves. Lively panel debates during the day will also give the audience a unique insight into the creative process.
Art and film
At Special Collections on 12 October, guided tours of the current exhibition, The Language of Process, will explore how technology has changed the way designs are created.
A hands-on session suitable for adults and children will investigate how the processes and materials of making have changed over time by looking at objects dating back through 150 years of design.
The North West Film Archive have teamed up with the Manchester Modernist Society to present What Is A City But The People, also on 12 october.
The archive film screening and guided walk explores the modernist dreams of poet-war Manchester.
Staff and graduates
Footage from the film archive has also been used in the new Jeremy Deller exhibition, All That Is Solid Melts into Air, which opens at the Manchester Art Gallery on 11 October.
