Hive Radio station manager wins national competition

A FILM student from MMU will be heard by millions this week, as he has been named the voice of Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Derry Londonderry.

Peter Cinnamond, station manager of the newly-relaunched Hive Radio at MMU was chosen to provide the voiceovers for adverts for the event, and recordings of his voice will also be played on the day introducing acts on stage.

Peter heard about the opportunity after attending the national student radio conference in his role as Hive’s station manager.

He said: “The conference was a great opportunity to meet people from industry – as it turned out they were looking for people to be the voice of the festival so I sent a demo and I got selected!”

Award-winning station

Peter says he would not have had the opportunity to become the voice of the Big Weekend if it wasn’t for Hive Radio.

“It’s strange hearing your own voice on national radio,” he said. “My little brother’s friends keep texting to ask if I can get tickets but I have to let them down – I’m just a hired voice!”

Hive was relaunched last September, moving on from its previous incarnation as MMU Radio, and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Peter said: “As one last roll of the dice we relaunched in September and it’s been great. We have more members than ever before, we go live two days a week and have a blog.

“We won most improved station in the country at the national conference and were part of the team that won region of the year. We were also selected as one of just six stations to do a show at the conference.”
