International celebration for the School of Art

175 events to take place across the globe

FROM London to Dresden to California, the celebration of 175 years of Manchester School of Art is a global affair, with 175 public events across the world.

Events currently listed on the 175 website include senior lecturer Alice Kettle’s textile art exhibition The Garden of England, in Greenwich, an exhibition of work by postgraduate Fine Art students at HFBK Dresden, in Germany, and Professor Stephen Dixon’s exhibition SS Argentina, at the American Museum of Ceramic Art, in Pomona.

Alice Kettle is also curating the exhibition Pairings – Conversations & Collaborations with Helen Felcey at London’s Contemporary Applied Arts.

A further international flavour is added by the inclusion of artists from MIRIAD in the Guangdong Museum of Art’s Issues of Urbanisation exhibition. Included in the exhibition are Christina Rodrigues, David Haley, Nick Dunn and Jane Brake.

On home ground

Closer to home, there are already many events confirmed to take place in Manchester between now and the beginning of June.

The new exhibition at the Holden Gallery, creation/destruction, opens on 12 April, while from 15 April Special Collections will be exploring ideas of make do and mend with an exhibition looking at repurposing and recycling.

There is an exciting programme of acoustic sessions in the Holden Gallery Café every Wednesday from 17 April, with performers including Nat Scott, Taylor & the Mason, Alex Hulme, Matthew Whitaker, Chris Eatough and Kim Jennett.

The Capitol Theatre’s Summer season kicks off on 24 April with Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Our Country’s Good, directed by Chris Honer, followed on 15 May by Polly Teale’s Bronte and on 5 June Tony Kushner’s A Bright Room Called Day.

Fabulous fashion

Fashionistas have two shows to look forward to as fashion students showcase their talents at Manchester Fashion Week and at the School of Art fashion show, ahead of taking to the national stage at Graduate Fashion Week this summer.

And there are also photography and book launches, the fourth annual MA Architecture and Urbanism symposium and an exciting exhibition from Project X students to look forward to.
