Football and Lego at Love Architecture festival

MMU hosts events as part of national celebration
A HOST of events celebrating architecture will be taking place at MMU next week as part of the national Love Architecture festival – including an insight into the most popular building bricks of all, Lego.
Simon Kent, senior design manager at Lego, will be giving an insight into the Danish company behind the best-selling blocks at a special debate to be held in the John Dalton Assembly Hall on Wednesday, 20 June.
Simon will give a behind-the-scenes peek at the design processes at Lego, and talk about how design details are added to houses.
He will also introduce the growing Lego Architecture range.
Football Focus
On Thursday, 21 June, members of Manchester School of Architecture and RIBA North West will be discussing the connection between football and the community, and exploring how that can be expanded to enrich the architectural agenda.
Talks will include David Bauckham’s discussion of the role of the dugout in football games, Andy Walsh of FC United’s story of rebel supporters and the highs and lows of building a stadium and Steve Millington’s examination of the match day routine at Manchester City Football Club.
Helen Aston will present the work of Emma Rayner, who looked at the relationship between Manchester United and the surrounding community, and Marianne Heaslip of URBED, who will show how renovation can be a real alternative to demolition.
Other events include the Love Architects conference on Tuesday, 19 June, which features free talks on employability and the profession from the Professional Research Forum of Manchester School of Architecture (MSA).
Leading Lights
The event will feature talks from leading industry professionals, including Darren Deane of MSA on ‘Louis Kahn ; Some Fresh Thoughts’, Steven Hodder of Hodder and Partners on the ‘Great Marlborough Street Tower’, George Epolito of MSA on ‘Displaced Fascist Aesthetics’, Gavin Elliot of BDP on ‘Lancashire County Cricket Club’, Amy Hanley of MSA on ‘Edgelands’ and Mike Hitchmoughof 3D Reid on the ‘Co-operative Group Sustainable Head Office’.
An exhibition of work by MA Landscape Architecture students, at 4 Picadilly Place from 21 June to 25 June, will showcase a range of radical concepts for landfill sites and deserted landscapes, while the degree shows from final-year students at MSA will also be on display throughout the festival in the John Dalton building.
