Drama students dazzle

Royal Exchange and more….

MMU’s Acting students are dazzling theatregoers across the North West this autumn.

24 second and third year students from The School of Theatre are currently performing in one of the largest casts ever seen at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre.

The actors make up the ‘enthusiastic’ ensemble in a new production of Christopher Marlowe’s famous tragedy Doctor Faustus, with the UK Theatre Network describing the students as ‘throwing themselves wholeheartedly into the… scenes’.

New Vic Theatre

A further eight student actors and musicians from MMU were chosen for the ensemble in Desire Under the Elms at the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.

This epic tale of ambition, love and passion in 19th century New England was written by Nobel Prize-winning playwright Eugene O’Neill and considered a great American classic.

Bolton Octagon

The new theatre season is also proving a success for final year Acting student Sam Lupton.

Sam, 20, is currently cast in A Streetcar Named Desire at the Bolton Octagon, Tennessee Williams’ most famous play.

The Durham-born actor will stay on as a cast member for the theatre’s production of Walter Greenwood’s Love on the Dole, adapted from the groundbreaking novel depicting working class life in Salford in the 1930s.

Doctor Faustus, Desire Under the Elms and A Streetcar Named Desire all run until 9th October. Love on the Dole runs from 14th October to 6th November 2010.

Notable alumni from The School of Theatre include Julie Walters, Richard Griffiths OBE and Bernard Hill.
