Degree Show 2010
MMU’s Degree Show kicks off tonight, with work from over 1,000 artists and designers from the Faculty of Art and Design going on show across the University’s All Saints campus.
Manchester’s biggest annual art exhibition - which runs until Wednesday 23rd June – the Degree Show attracts around 10,000 visitors each year.
The dazzling array of work on display includes fine art, photography, sculpture, textiles, graphic design, metalwork, ceramics, jewellery, lighting, animation and film-making.
Highlights this year include ice sculptures with a twist from Interactive Arts student Beth Cust and an unusual jewellery range from 3D Design student Hannah Pittman.
Unusual and innovative
Beth has decorated everyday items – including a teddy bear, umbrella, laptop and stack of books - with elaborate patterns using piped royal icing. The 22-year-old went through 68 500g boxes of icing undertaking the project, which has produced stunning and delicate results.
23-year-old Hannah has produced several ranges of innovative rings. The first range is made from hand-carved soap, inspired by Hannah’s own experience of finding herself without soap when going to wash her hands. As the soap wears away either a message engraved silver band or a diamond set in gold is revealed.
She has also designed a range of edible rings set with precious stones. These include chocolate set with emeralds, caramel set with sapphires and mint set with rubies.
Why not go along to see if you can spot the next the Warhol or maybe even pick up a bargain?
The Degree Show is free and open to the public 10am-6pm weekdays and 10am-4pm weekends.
