International photography prize
Design & Art Direction
A CAREER in documentary photography beckons for art student Helen Cathcart after she made her name in an international competition.
The 24-year-old who is studying for her Masters degree in the School of Design won first prize in the International Design & Art Direction Student Awards 2005.
Helen’s “exquisite” images of the Russian Ballet earned her the £1,000 award in the Photography Section of the competition.
Judges said her portfolio taken behind the scenes at Manchester Opera “answered the brief perfectly and its technical standard was very high”.
Brand name sponsors
Helen was subsequently asked to submit a portfolio of work to sponsors Olympus cameras and rival company Canon too!
Helen completes her MA in Design and Art Direction in September and she hopes to work as a freelance documentary photographer.
